“The theme ‘Surf-A-Billy’ came from my fascination with the rockabilly scene and the scene of surfers in the ’50′s and ’60′s. They all seemed like they were having a blast, enjoying life.

With the feel of the range I wanted some stuff to remind me of when I was a little bit younger and my friends and I used to cut, shred and rip clothes to make them into something else on those hot days when it just seems you can’t get comfortable. Some of the other pieces I wanted to have a ’50s, ’60s feel but not look so stiff. A lot of the clothes from back then look like they could stand up on the their own, almost like you starched the shit of them.”

– Jared Mell

Not only are we stoked on this (and every other) collection Insight dropped at The ‘Loop, Jared Mell is one of our favorite surfers with his progressive, smooth longboarding style and it’s about damned time dude got his own signature collection. And to hear he digs on rockabilly tunes just seals the deal in making Mell one of the coolest motherfuckers on the planet.

Check out Jared’s flick above, and be sure to peep the Insight Summer 2011 collection at Karmaloop.

The actual music video doesn’t begin until the two minute marker, but this is definitely some vintage Snoop Dogg that we can’t really get sick of. The video is a cool viral look at his past too. The Doggumentary is out now!

Teruo Artistry x Six Reasons: Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200

1 May

Hailing from Watts, Los Angeles, Six Reasons found strength through fighting to stay alive. With no father around and a mother addicted to crack, Six Reasons provided for himself by any means necessary. Dude slept on bus benches when there was no home to go to, robbed fast food joints when there was nothing to eat, stole cars to get to school and sold drugs to buy clothes. When Six Reasons was not scraping by, he was battling for his life from the join or die mentality of gangs.

Baptism by fire either makes you or breaks you – it made Six Reasons: money, power, respect, fame, fear and love.

We’re sold that Six Reasons’ latest effort, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200 (a collaborative joint with DJ Skee and Teruo Artistry) will further bring dude all of the above – he’s already hearing acclaim from rappers 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes as well as critics and chat-room know-it-alls alike… don’t sleep on this rising star.

Download Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200 and stay on Teruo Artistry’s radar to see what else they have in store with Six Reasons.

After months of being courted by the music industry’s biggest bosses, word on the curb is Odd Future are staying independent with major backing. I hear the ink ain’t dry but Odd Future Records will sign with RED Distribution/Sony. All acts under one umbrella with the same creative freedom they have now. When pressed for confirmation, manager Chris Clancy sent this statement below.

“It’s based on getting the distribution deal we’ve always envisioned that allows the group to “sign themselves” to their own company and keep their masters. They will have 100% creative control of all aspects of their music, art, and release schedule with no 3rd party participation in outside business. Freedom and ownership was the whole point. Red and Sony know that its in everyone’s best interest to maintain the group’s authenticity and control. They built it, they deserve it. There’s no cheesy hooks or fluorescent liquor product placements in the works.. It’s about to be fun.. and different.. “

(The Summer Deck Sneaker in Brown)

Another smanger courtesy of our folks at adidas – ladies and gentlemen… the Spring ’11 Summer Deck Sneaker.

Summer weather is coming (we think), so it’s only natural that the seasonal trend of converting boat shoes to lifestyle-inspired sneakers continues. We’ll admit that we haven’t necessarily been the biggest fans over the past couple years, but… well, thanks, adidas!

Boasting both leather and suede panels throughout with ubiquitous white gum rubber soles, we’re stoked on the stiched-in trademark “three stripes” as well as the boat shoe detail at the toe. The blue interior is something like a best-kept secret but throw in some matching boat laces (the only oversight is adidas including sneaker laces) and you’re golden… or as black as our hearts, depending on the colorway of your choice.
